Chattr — Terms of Service
1. Who we are and how to contact us
Chattr ("we", "us", "our", the "Service") is operated by Chattr Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17199526) ("Chattr"). Our registered office is at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ.
You can reach us at the following addresses, monitored during UK business hours: - General and support: support@chattr.uk - Content reports and safety: abuse@chattr.uk - Legal notices: legal@chattr.uk - Data protection: privacy@chattr.uk
2. About these terms
These Terms of Service (the "Terms"), together with our Privacy Policy and our Community Guidelines, form a legally binding agreement between you and Chattr. By creating an account or using the Service, you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, you must not use the Service.
Our Community Guidelines and Privacy Policy are incorporated into these Terms by reference. Where these Terms refer to rules about what you may post, the Community Guidelines set out the detail.
3. Who can use Chattr
Chattr is built for university students in the United Kingdom. To use the Service you must: - Be aged 18 or over. Chattr is not intended for, and may not be used by, anyone under 18; - Confirm your age and your acceptance of these Terms during sign-up; - Provide a valid mobile telephone number for verification; and - Provide a UK university email address ending in .ac.uk, and confirm it using the link we email you within 10 days of providing it.
If we discover that an account belongs to someone under 18, or that eligibility information is false, we may suspend or remove that account.
4. Your account
You are responsible for activity that takes place through your account. You must keep your access to your verification phone number and email secure, and tell us promptly at support@chattr.uk if you believe someone else has accessed your account.
You may hold only one account. You must not create an account using another person's identity or contact details, sell or transfer your account, or share access to it.
5. Anonymity, and what it does and does not mean
Posts, comments and votes on Chattr are displayed anonymously to other users. We do this on purpose: it is the point of the Service. But anonymity to other users is not the same as being untraceable to us, and it does not change what the law requires of you.
You remain legally responsible for everything you post. Posting anonymously does not protect you from the consequences of posting unlawful content, and it does not prevent us from acting on it.
6. Acceptable use
Chattr has ZERO TOLERANCE for objectionable content and for abusive behaviour towards other users. Accounts that post such content, or abuse other users, are removed. You agree to use Chattr in line with our Community Guidelines. In particular, you must not post, share, or use Chattr to: - Post content that is illegal under the law of England and Wales, including content that is a criminal offence to share; - Bully, harass, threaten, intimidate or stalk any person; - Identify, "dox", or reveal private information about another person — including their name, address, room or hall number, timetable, vehicle, social media, or other details that could identify or locate them — without their consent; - Post content that is defamatory, or that you know to be false and that could damage someone's reputation; - Post hateful content, or content that incites hatred or violence against people based on a protected characteristic; - Post or solicit sexual content involving anyone under 18, or any child sexual abuse material. We report such material to the relevant authorities; - Encourage or assist suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders; - Promote, facilitate or arrange the supply of illegal drugs, weapons, or other unlawful goods; - Share intimate images of a person without their consent; - Impersonate any person or organisation, including Chattr staff or representatives; - Post spam, run scams, attempt fraud, or post unsolicited advertising; - Infringe anyone's intellectual property rights; - Attempt to break, probe, overload, or gain unauthorised access to the Service, or use bots, scrapers, or automated means to access or inflate activity on it; - Attempt to re-identify other anonymous users, or compile information to do so.
7. Content moderation and safety
Chattr is a regulated user-to-user service under the Online Safety Act 2023. We operate systems and processes designed to keep illegal content, and content harmful to our users, off the Service. These include: - Automated filtering of every post, comment, poll and direct message at the moment it is submitted, before it is shown to anyone: content matching our blocklist (including hate speech, threats, child sexual abuse signals, and personal information such as phone numbers and addresses) is refused outright, and other suspect content is held or flagged for human review; - Automated checking of every image before it is published: images are screened by an automated safety system at the point of upload, and an image that the check identifies as unsafe — or that cannot be checked — is refused or held for human review rather than being shown. Images are also subject to the same reporting, review and escalation as all other content, and are removed on the same basis; - An in-app reporting tool on every post, with a defined set of report reasons; - User-level blocking: you can block another user from any post, which removes their content from your feed and prevents further contact; - A moderation queue reviewed by appointed reviewers, and administrator oversight of all reports; - Priority escalation routes for the most serious content, including child sexual abuse material and credible threats to life; - Crisis signposting for content suggesting a risk of suicide or self-harm; and - An appeals process for users whose content is removed.
We act on reports of objectionable content within 24 hours of receiving them — by removing the content where the report is well-founded and, where appropriate, restricting or removing the account that posted it. We deal with the most serious categories, such as child safety, more quickly still, and with other complaints within a reasonable time.
8. Your content
8.1 Ownership and operating licence
You keep ownership of the content you create on Chattr ("Your Content"). By posting it, you grant Chattr a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, display, and distribute Your Content for the purposes of operating, moderating, securing, and improving the Service, and to keep records where the law requires. This licence ends when Your Content is deleted from the Service, except for copies we must retain for legal, safety, or backup reasons for a limited period.
You confirm that you have the right to post Your Content and that it does not break these Terms, the Community Guidelines, or the law.
8.2 Content licence — reposting and promotion
By posting content to Chattr, you grant Chattr Ltd a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licensable and transferable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt, publish, publicly display and distribute your content: (a) within the Chattr app to other users; and (b) on Chattr's own marketing and social-media channels (for example Instagram and TikTok) in anonymised form — with no name or identifying detail — including within branded graphics. This licence continues only as long as needed for those purposes and, following deletion of your content or account, survives solely for copies already shared externally beforehand. You confirm you own or have the rights to grant this licence and that your content complies with the Acceptable Use section. You may ask us to remove a specific reposted item and we will make reasonable efforts to do so.
9. Reporting content and complaints
If you see content that breaks these Terms or the law, please report it using the in-app report button, or email abuse@chattr.uk. Tell us which post is affected and why, so we can act quickly.
If you believe content defames you, infringes your rights, or reveals your private information, contact us at legal@chattr.uk with enough detail to identify the content and the issue. We operate a notice-and-action process and will respond appropriately.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled a report or a moderation decision, you can appeal in the app or contact support@chattr.uk. For complaints about how we handle your personal data, see the Privacy Policy, which explains your right to complain to us and to the ICO.
10. Our intellectual property
The Chattr name, logo, branding, design, software, and all other materials we provide (other than user content) belong to Chattr or our licensors and are protected by law. We grant you a personal, limited, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service for its intended purpose. You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, or create competing services from our materials, except to the extent the law allows.
11. Suspension and termination
You may stop using Chattr and delete your account at any time through the app's settings.
We may suspend, restrict, or end your access to the Service, with or without notice, if you break these Terms or the Community Guidelines, if we are required to by law, or if we reasonably believe it is necessary to protect the Service or other users. Where the breach is serious — for example, posting illegal content, threats, or content harmful to children — we may act immediately and may report the matter to the police or other authorities.
Sections that by their nature should survive the end of this agreement — including sections 8 (your content licence, to the limited extent stated), 10 (our intellectual property), 12 (our responsibility to you), 13 (your responsibility to us), and 15 (governing law) — continue to apply after it ends.
12. Our responsibility to you
Subject to that, and because Chattr is provided free of charge: - The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise it will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we may change, suspend, or withdraw all or part of it; - We are not responsible for content created by users, or for loss or harm caused by another user's content or conduct, beyond operating the safety systems described in section 7 and our duties under applicable law; - We are not liable for loss that is not reasonably foreseeable, for business losses, or for loss of data, profit, or goodwill; and - To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you arising out of or in connection with the Service is limited to £100.
13. Your responsibility to us
If you use Chattr in a way that breaks these Terms or the law and this causes us to suffer loss, incur costs, or face a claim from someone else, you agree to be responsible for that loss and those reasonable costs, to the extent it results from your breach. This does not apply to the extent the loss is caused by us.
14. Changes to these Terms or the Service
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the law or in how the Service works. If we make significant changes, we will give you reasonable notice through the app or by other means. If you continue to use Chattr after the changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not accept them, you should stop using the Service and may delete your account.
15. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms, and any dispute arising out of or in connection with them or the Service, are governed by the law of England and Wales. You and we agree that the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK, you may also bring proceedings in your home jurisdiction as the law allows.
16. General
- Whole agreement. These Terms, the Community Guidelines, and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. - If part is unenforceable. If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. - No waiver. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later. - No third parties. These Terms do not give rights to anyone other than you and us under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999. - Transfer. We may transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to another organisation, for example if our business is sold; this will not affect your rights.
17. Invites and rewards
Chattr runs an invite scheme. Every account has a personal invite link, and reaching set numbers of verified invites earns a reward. The rewards, and the number of invites each one needs, are shown on your Referrals page in the app and may change from time to time; the reward you receive is the one shown at the time you reach it. Some rewards exist only inside Chattr, such as karma, which has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money or goods or transferred between accounts. Where we offer a gift card, it is supplied through a third party rewards provider whose own terms apply to the card once it is issued, and we do not offer cash in its place. We will not advertise a reward we are not in a position to provide.
An invite counts towards a reward only when the person you invited has verified a UK university email address, has posted or voted at least once, and signed up with their own mobile telephone number, which must not be the same number as yours or as another of your invites. We remember your link for 30 days from the moment someone opens it, and the first link a person opens is the one that counts. To take part you must be aged 18 or over and hold an account in good standing; accounts that are suspended, or under review for a breach of our Community Guidelines, cannot earn or claim rewards while that is the case. Chattr staff and contractors, and their immediate families, may use invite links but cannot claim rewards.
Rewards are approved by a person at Chattr, not automatically, and you must hold a verified university email address at the time of approval to be paid. Where a reward is a gift card, a claim link appears on your Referrals page and we notify you in the app. Treat that claim link like cash: anyone who holds it can redeem it, and we cannot re-issue one that has already been redeemed by someone you shared it with.
We may withhold a reward, remove invite credit, or remove you from the scheme where we reasonably believe that invites do not represent real, separate people; that the same person, telephone number or device is behind more than one of them; that invite links have been posted as spam or in a way that breaks the rules of another platform; or that an account involved has breached these Terms or our Community Guidelines. Where we do this we will tell you and explain why, and you can ask us to look at it again by writing to support@chattr.uk. We may change the rewards or the thresholds, or end the scheme, at any time, and any change applies from the moment it is published; a reward you have already been approved for will still be honoured. Rewards under this scheme are given for personal, non-business activity, and if your circumstances make one taxable that is your responsibility. To run the scheme we record who invited whom and whether an invite has verified and been active; we do not reveal your identity to the people you invite, or theirs to you. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle this.
